Something for the Weekend.... Chinese New Year 2012

This Sunday, January 29, 2012, sees the celebrations to welcome in the Year of the Dragon take place in Chinatown and Shaftesbury Avenue. The festivities begin at noon with an official opening ceremony in Trafalgar Square, followed by a variety of performances featuring music, dance, Chinese dragons, lions, acrobatics and firecrackers.

The Sparkle & Spin family have headed down to the celebrations for the past few years and it is an event not to be missed. We throughly recommend ending the celebrations with a banquet fit for a King (and Queen) in Chinatown!!

We headed to Centre Parcs for a week after Christmas and despite being a bit sceptical initially we had an amazing time.

It is just the perfect getaway for the family and there really is something for everyone. So if you are thinking of taking some time out be sure to put Centre Parcs on your list!!

Something for the Weekend....White Cube Bermondsey

Since we heard White Cube were opening a third space our side of the river we've been desperate to visit and so this weekend we will be heading to Bermondsey Street to checkout White Cube Bermondsey
Designed by Casper Mueller Kneer Architects who are based in London and Berlin. The building has been altered to include three exhibition spaces, private viewing rooms, an auditorium and a bookshop.

They are currently showing Anselm Kiefer and we can't wait to check it out :)

In our house January seems to be the month for making plans and trying to begin (or finish) all those pesky DIY chores that are forever on our mind. We are making plans to revamp the nursery now the scamps are no longer babies (or even toddlers) so were very happy to stumble across Pistachio Giraffe!!

Based locally but running as an online business Pistachio Giraffe create quirky and unique furniture from vintage pieces. As well as offering finished furniture for sale online they are happy to work with you to establish what you have in mind – style, colour, feel and decoration, to create a bespoke and unique piece of furniture to meet your needs.

This weekend we will be heading to the Design Museum to check out Grandfather of design Terence Conran's exhibition The Way We Live Now.

Exploring Conran’s impact and legacy the exhibition traces his career from post-war austerity through to the new sensibility of the Festival of Britain in the 1950s, the birth of the Independent Group and the Pop Culture of the 1960s, to the design boom of the 1980s and on to the present day.

We know that we are going to love it all and there is sure to be some furniture envy!! Oh and of course no trip to the Design Museum is complete without a trip to the shop to check out their latest products :)

With most of us watching the pennies after a Christmas splurge some things just have to be taken off the shopping list.

For us girls at Sparkle & Spin the first luxury item to go is the magazine. Now we really love a magazine (or two), they are great for inspiration and letting us know about brands or shops we don't know about so we have really found it difficult to stop picking them up of the shelves.

With one of our New Years Resolutions being to try and get fitter (we are of course already fit!) we were very pleased to visit the wonderful Push Studios.

Based just down the road from us in heart of East Dulwich, Push Studios offers 3 separate fitness rooms with two dedicated studios for classes and a separate Personal Training gym. There is literally something for everyone with Push offering classes from Ballet to Pole fit and they can even teach you how to dance like an extra from Strictly on your Wedding Day.

It can be hard to find nice things to hang on your wall but since stumbling across Keep Calm Gallery we've had no trouble!

Established in 2007 by Lucas Lepola and Hayley Thwaites, the site was born out of their passion for typography in poster design, British heritage and the medium of screen printing.

The site features a wide selection of work from some fantastic artists, designers and print makers. Lucas and Hayley work closely with their artists and printers to be able to offer the highest quality fine art prints for the home. Today Keep Calm Gallery also offers a small range of home wares including fine bone china mugs and lovely cotton tea towels.

We love this site and many a gift has been chosen from the gallery so please go and check them out but we're warning you it could be dangerous ;)

Christmas At Covent Garden

We love London but especially at Christmas, there is always something to do and lots to see. We headed over to Covent Garden last week to check out the Reindeer petting, fantastic Christmas decorations and to do a spot more Christmas shopping!!

This year Covent Garden has been been transformed into a festive wonderland with a giant Christmas tree on the West Piazza and a topiary reindeer on the East Piazza. We love the giant red baubles and strings of light is really is the perfect place to get festive!

If you get a chance check it out and if you visit between Thursday and Saturday be sure to sample something from the Real Food Market.

We spent last weekend at the Southbank's Traditional Christmas Market and it was great!!!

With over fifty traditional twinkling wooden chalets along the Queen's Walk offering all things Christmassy from wooden toys, jewellery, hand-made soaps, gingerbread hearts and quirky gifts.

Oh and not forgetting bratwurst, roasted pork and potatoes, roasted chestnuts and warming Glühwein it is a real Christmas treat!

There is also a traditional carousel to enjoy should you need to give your feet a rest!

StorkUp founders Fiona and Claire met when Fiona set up a Facebook group for local mums. As well as sharing their experiences of pregnancy and motherhood, they began to exchange links to some of the best children’s products they found on the web. Several cups of tea later and Stork Up was conceived as a forum to share, discover, and buy products found online.

It's A Wrap Featuring Papermash

Wrap Up Warm For Winter

There is definitely a chill in the air so we think it's time we all got wrapped up for Winter. For AW11 we have some great coats in stock that will keep your little one warm and cosy but still looking cool.

Mini Rodini's classic Luton coat looks great in both blue and red and is perfect for the boy and the girls, we love the cute leather panda motif ;)

Something for the Weekend....Norwegian Christmas Fair

We are planning on getting in the Christmas spirit and visit annual Norwegian Christmas Fair (Julebasar) at the Norwegian Church and Seamen’s Mission, St. Olav’s Church in Rotherhithe.

Traditional Norwegian food is served as well as Christmas gifts and groceries from Norway. There will also be dozens of people in their Norwegian national costumes, the “bunad” and the fair will be opened by Helge Flostrand, Captain of the Royal Norwegian Navy. We think it will be a great place to start our Christmas shopping.

Now in our house Daddy really doesn't buy flowers often enough especially when we have the gorgeous Fresh Flower Company just on our doorstep. Stocking beautiful seasonal flowers we can always find something to bring the outside inside and brighten up our flat.

Autumn is in the Air

There is an Autumn chill in the air and it's finally time to start pushing the summer clothes to the back of the wardrobe and start getting cosy. To start to get wrapped up and warm we think that layering is the way forward and we have some great long sleeve tees to get you started.

This long sleeve top from Molo with its graphic aeroplane print and contrasting blue stitching is definitely one for the boys. We love the soft cotton rib and think it looks great teamed with jeans or joggers.

Milibe's classic pointelle top is pretty and delicate yet practical and is sure to be worn time and time again, also available in rose.

Something for the Weekend... Lord Mayors Show

We just can't get enough of those bangs, whizzes and pops so this weekend we will be heading to the river to catch the magnificent firework display that marks the end of the Lord Mayors show.

We're not planning on going along to the show this year but can thoroughly recommend it having watched the 3 mile long extravaganza the past two years. The show welcomes into office the new Lord Mayor of the City of London - this year, it's the turn of the 684th Mayor and features carriages (including the 253-year-old, gold Lord Mayor's State Coach), marching bands and floats with people from a huge variety of London communities getting involved.

The fireworks kick off at 5.00pm and includes more than half a tonne of giant fireworks. It's one of London's most spectacular annual displays, and you'll be able to see the fireworks for miles, but for the best view of all head down to Victoria Embankment. Maybe see you there :)

We are really lucky to live in an area with lot of great things on our doorstep so we thought that over the next few weeks we'd share some of our favourite haunts. So if you're local then check them out and if you're not maybe you should come and visit to give them a whirl ;)

So first up is Scoop ed, an amazing ice cream parlour that is literally down the road from Sparkle & Spin HQ. Owned by the lovely Sarah Baxter it sells amazing Italian ice cream in a variety of flavours in both kid and adult friendly portions. Scoop ed also sells a range of other snacks, including bagels and waffles and Sarah makes a mean cup of coffee. We are yet to try it but Scoop ed can make your very own ice cream cake for those special occasions ( no cake involved or so we are told!).

Next time you're in our part of the world pop and have a scoop or two you won't regret it and the kids are sure to thank you. Oh and please let us know what you think!

Funky Fleeces

Despite the sun playing tricks and coming out to play trips to the park are still a cold event and we think that there is nothing better than a fleece to keep you warm and cosy!

If you are anything like us girls at Sparkle & Spin you love a jean or two (or possibly even 42 at the last count!).

They are comfy, practical and hardwearing and just perfect for the little ones to race around in, you can get them in so many style, shapes and colours what's not to love?! Well for AW11 we have some great jeans (even if we do say so ourselves).

Something for the Weekend..... Diddi Dance Silent Disco

Our amazing friends over at Diddi Dance are taking part in Free to Dance an event that aims to see 10,000 people dancing in London and the event organiser, Ben break the world record for the world’s longest ever dance by an individual. He’ll be dancing through the entire 131-hour silent disco lineup (five and a half days!) and raising money for LearnBurma, a registered charity which exists to raise awareness for the situation in Burma.

You can join the lineup by registering with one of the groups dancing, Diddi Dance have a spot on the 15th October. Or if shaking your tail feather isn't your thing simply sponsor someone involved or just show you support by cheering the dancers on. We can't wait to get our dancing shoes on.

Cosy Up In A Cardi

Brrr it's getting cold outside so we think it's time to wrap up and celebrate the cardi!! Now we are not talking about the o.a.p style woolies instead check out some of the funky winter warmers from our favourite brands.

Last weekend we finally got round to visiting the Start desk and took part in some of the activities they offer. The scamps really enjoyed the I-spy game which had us exploring the gallery to find images that matched the fabric icons from the Tate bag. As you spot the icons you can velcro them into the bag to create a collage. We throughly recommend it!

Mum to Olivia (6) and Tahlia (4), former advertising executive Zoe decided it was time for a lifestyle overhaul, and after experiencing the positive benefits of Pilates retrained as an instructor and now plans to help re educate our bodiesin the wonderful world of pilates. 1. Where do you look for inspiration?
Joseph Pilates parents were told their asthmatic sickly son would never live into adult life. As a result the put Jo out to play all day long whatever the weather (in those days it would have been more recommended to tuck him up tight and hide him from the light and possible germs outside). He became an expert in martial arts, dance and boxing, trained soldiers and was a popular model for anatomy manuals. In creating Pilates he preached that ‘physical fitness was the first requisite of happiness’. I’ve always been a sucker for a story of triumph against the odds and teaching Pilates has led me to some amazing individuals who have suffered real physical set-backs. It is always inspiring stuff.

2. Greatest influence?
My family. When I was a young girl, my mother was incredible. She worked hard in the community for people who really needed a voice and I always new it was invaluable. There are many members of my family who work in this way and although we aren’t always connected, I truly admire and respect the work that they do. These core values have always impacted some of the most important decisions I’ve made.

3. What's on your wardrobe wishlist for your son/daughter this season?
Dear Sparkle & Spin. I would love to find gorgeous black school shoes for my daughters that can withstand all weather, cope with gymnastics and tree climbing - and still look cool when in civilian clothes.

4. Name your favourite childrenswear designers.
I love British brand ‘I Love Gorgeous’ for pretty party clothes and for basics I have always loved the Scandinavians – Plastisock Circus print always gets a thumbs up and I can spot it a mile away.

5. Name your and your child's most treasured possession.
Blankies for them and for me, my engagement and wedding rings

6. Earliest childhood memory.
Happily tinkering in the garden on hot sunny days, mum in the kitchen singing loudly while cooking up a storm

7. Describe your perfect family weekend.
I prefer not to plan too much but a good balance of exercise, socialising, and down time always makes those two days feel well lived. Some time out of the house with my other half is the cherry on the top.

8. Name the best kept secret in London.
The Body Control Pilates Studio in Holborn has some of the best Pilates teachers you will find in London. A few sessions with any of them will leave you feeling totally rejuvenated.

9. Name your and your child's favourite bedtime story.
I love the very old fashioned Dorothy Edwards stories ‘My Naughty Little Sister’. Both my girls love them and somehow we all relate…..

10. Do you Sparkle or Spin?
The last couple of years have definitely had me spinning but with a bit of a brand re-launch in the planning I’m nearly sparkling...

Music to Our Ears (Almost!!)

When one of the scamps declared at the age of 4 she wanted to play the piano I was a bit stumped about what to do!! Fortunately we live in an area alive and kicking with activities for bump, babies and beyond and as soon as the words left my mouth I was helpfully directed to SE22 Piano School.

The brainchild of Lorraine Liyanage the piano school was started three years ago and now accommodates 60 pupils ranging from 3 to 60. The school has three teachers that specialise in teaching piano to different age ranges and abilities:

Rachel teaches the youngest beginners from age 3. She is currently training at The British Kodaly Academy in specialised music teaching methods for pre-school children.

Gabrielle teaches older beginners and adults in both classical and jazz piano. She also has an interest in teaching advanced level theory, grades 5 to 8.

Lorraine teaches classical piano to intermediate to advanced students and specialises in preparing students for entry to secondary schools on music scholarships. Lorraine has been playing the piano for 28 years now and teaches many different styles of music (we are waiting with baited breath for the day when the scamp can make it through Lady Gaga's Poker Face!!).

Despite being a bit of a sceptic and scared of being singled out as a pushy Mum we can't get enough of the lessons. DD1 is keen to show her skills off to the rest of the family and we can often be found grouped around the piano singing along (very slowly) to Mary had a Little Lamb!! It's music to our ears, well almost!

The piano school's Christmas concert will take place at St Gabriel's Church in Pimlico on Saturday 5th of November. Students are each invited to perform solo pieces to a large audience of friends and family. All prospective students are most welcome to attend just contact Lorraine for more information.

Busy Bodies

So it's the school holidays and those six weeks stretch out ahead of us like a lifetime!! Well here at Sparkle & Spin HQ we have some great gifts and toys that will keep those little bodies busy!

We are very lucky here in leafy South London to have lots of lovely neighbours, at the top of our list of lovely folk are the brilliant boys over at Present & Correct.

Evolved from a love (verging on an obsession) of all things stationary, the lovely Neal and Mark set up Present & Correct in 2003 and have been busy sourcing beautifully designed objects ever since. Puzzling Puzzles

There has been plenty of head scrathcing and chin rubbing going on at the Sparkle & Spin HQ recently and it's all down to these great new puzzles that have arrived from French brand Djeco. There is something for everyone starting with block puzzles for the tinies up to 100 piece puzzlers for the older kids. We love the great illustrations and bright colours and of course there is no better feeling than when you slot that last piece into place!
